Dumplings make a great alternative to biscuits or dinner rolls. This one pot meal will quickly become a family favourite.
Ingredients

1 ½ pound of cubed beef
-
⅓ cup butter
-
3 garlic cloves, minced
-
8 potatoes, diced
-
3 carrots, chopped
-
2 celery stalks, chopped
-
1 onion, diced
-
2 tablespoons ketchup
-
¼ cup soy sauce
-
1 carton of beef stock
-
½ cup of wine
-
4 cups water
-
½ cup flour
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste

1 cup flour

½ teaspoon salt
-
½ teaspoon white sugar
-
2 teaspoon baking soda
-
2 tablespoons cold butter
-
1 egg
-
½ cup milk or cream

Directions
Over medium heat, melt butter in a large pot. Add garlic and sauté until softened.
Add beef cubes and season with salt and pepper. Sauté beef until browned then turn heat to low while prepping the vegetables.
Once vegetables are prepped, increase heat to medium/high and add veggies to the pot. Stir well.
In a bowl, combine ketchup, soy sauce, beef stock, wine and water. Set aside.
Once the vegetables are slightly softened, sprinkle flour over the meat and vegetables. Stir to combine.
Pour broth mixture into the pot and stir well, scraping up any bits at the bottom of the pan.
Cover pot and decrease heat to allow stew to simmer for approximately 45 minutes.
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda. Cut in cold butter until pea sized balls form.
Mix in the egg and milk (or cream) until the batter is well combined.
Twenty five minutes before serving the stew, increase the heat to medium/high and bring stew to a slight boil.
Drop small spoonfulls of the dumpling batter into the boiling stew and cook uncovered for ten minutes.
Turn heat to low and cover the pot. Cook stew and dumplings for ten more minutes.
